Have you noticed when you have an undertaking with an element of uncertainty, the lead-up can be worse than the actual moment?
Let me explain.
You know you need to have a difficult conversation with someone.
You sweat it for days.
You start planning the best opportunity. The time of day. The location.
Rehearsing what you are going to say.
Predicting what they are going to say.
The mental gymnastics are excruciating.
Then you have the conversation. There’s a few awkward moments. Maybe even tears.
But on the other side, you realise the lead-up in your head was an exaggeration of what unfolded.
It wasn’t as bad as you thought it was going to be.
What do you dread doing?
Is it…
- making an uncomfortable phone call
- posting on social media
- publishing your writing online
- having a difficult conversation
- speaking in public
- or something else?
In the words of Susan Jeffers book title, “Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
When you get to the other side, checkin with yourself.
Was the moment you dreaded really as difficult as you had imagined?
