for International Women’s Day

In a departure from my usual style, on this International Women’s Day, I wanted to share three things for which I am humbly impressed and grateful.

Fiona Wood’s biography, ‘Under Her Skin’ by Sue Williams

Recently my curiosity about collaborative partnerships behind Australian inventions led me to discover the spray-on skin cell technology used in treating burns patients is attributed to Dr Fiona Wood and her business partner, Marie Stoner. Wanting to dig deeper into the relationship between the two women, I listened to Fiona Wood’s biography, ‘Under Her Skin’ written by Sue Williams.

I’m calling this biography ‘A must-read for any Australian woman who aspires to be a better leader.’ There is much to learn from Fiona Wood’s example. Her partnership with Marie and their Eureka moment of realising a spray was the solution they were looking for, is a beautiful example of a team at its best. The relationship between the two is synergistic.

And surprisingly, or perhaps not so surprisingly, it is just one of many examples where Fiona teams with others for great impact.

That’s all I am giving away here. You need to get the book. If you don’t have time to read, get it on Audible and listen to it while you’re driving, exercising or ironing 😉 For the guys who read my newsletter, you will love this one, too, and I can recommend it as the perfect gift for the women around you.

The work of my local Zonta club and Zonta International

Late last year, I joined the Zonta Club of Rockhampton. I was reviewing and updating a slide show in preparation for the International Womens Day Breakfast this morning (with a record number of 250 guests). The work of my local club aligned with Zonta International is building a better world for women and girls and includes:

  • 26100 members from 1100 clubs in 62 countries
  • programs that encourage and recognise young women in public affairs, aviation, business and STEM
  • causes such as advocating for gender equity, ending child marriage, ending gender based violence and expanding access to education.

Every time I attend one of my club’s events, I am better informed and inspired by other women, their work, and the difference we can make.

If you want to learn more about Zonta and find a club near you, reply by email. I will help where possible.

The women in my circles

I am blessed to have amazing women around me.

  • My mother, sisters and the women in my extended family.
  • My mentors and the women I have mentored over the years. Colleagues and friends alike.
  • The women I have had the joy of meeting and getting to know over the last nine months as I grow my network and new career.

Every one has a remarkable story. Their courage, creativity and compassion inspires me. My heart is full.

I hope you similary are inspired and celebrate the women in your circles.
