Dreading a Difficult Conversation? Here’s How to Overcome It!

One Idea:

I am sure you are familiar with the phrase ‘pity party’.

Let me introduce you to something I have experienced and witnessed far more often with leaders… The Fret Fest.

We often build up scenarios in our minds, making them seem more daunting than they actually are. The mental and emotional gymnastics we put ourselves through can be more stressful than the actual event or task we’re dreading. This is the fret fest.

One Example:

Take your pick:

  • making an uncomfortable phone call
  • having a difficult conversation
  • giving feedback
  • speaking in public
  • dealing with an aggressive person

One Question:

What task or conversation are you currently avoiding, and how might your fret fest be exaggerating its difficulty?

One Quote:

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage.” – Dale Carnegie

One Small Action:

Identify one thing you’ve been dreading and commit to doing it within the next 48 hours. Afterwards, consider how reality compares to your anticipation. Use this to build confidence for future challenges. Forgo the fret fest.
