Gratitude in Leadership: A Simple Way to Boost Morale and Engagement

One idea: Showing gratitude

I have long thought that Australia is adopting the wrong traditions of the United States. Halloween and Black Friday Sales are becoming a thing. Yet Thanksgiving is overlooked. While we don’t have a public holiday or travel to spend time with family, we can still be thankful for our blessings.

As a leader, showing gratitude towards team members is a win-win. There are huge benefits for the individual expressing gratitude as well as the person on the receiving end.

One quote

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” – William Arthur Ward

One question

Who and what are you grateful for at work?

One example Some research

  1. Research indicates that leaders who express appreciation tend to be more satisfied at work, experience less burnout, and are perceived as more influential and respected.
  2. Grateful leaders report lower stress levels, improved sleep quality, and greater overall happiness, which in turn positively impacts their teams.
  3. A Glassdoor survey found that 81% of employees reported they would exert more effort for a grateful boss, highlighting the direct link between gratitude and employee engagement.

One small action

Handwrite a note to someone to show your gratitude. Interestingly, a handwritten note has more impact than an email in today’s modern workplace.
